U No team from the University of Bristol has made an experimental optical chip, the size of a coin makes a first estimate.
The chip uses optical quantum particles of light instead of traditional silicon components.
The calculation: to find the prime factors of 15 and give the answer: 3 and 5 respectively. Despite the slowness of the calculation, they begin to exploit the unique properties of quantum mechanics, like photons can exist in a superposition of 2 states at the same time, transistors compared to a PC photons are also relatively free of noise and allow transmit information at the speed of light.
This technology could be applied eventually to create secure connections to the Internet and the development of new materials and medicines.
