Edward Robert Hughes - Dream Idyll (The Valkyrie)

The Valkyries, figures of Norse mythology , name literally means " The choosing of the fallen in battle "because under the command of Freyja and the service of Odin, riding winged horses on the land, choosing the best warriors and then killing them, take them to the golden palace of Valhalla . was an honor to die for this noble purpose, any warrior wanted to resign before to suffer the sorrows of a dull old age, being pierced by the spear of Odin and then sent to be run through the five hundred forty doors Vingolf existing-home of the warriors in Valhalla. Gradually across each of these portals, the Valkyries were fed mead and lavished them countless unimaginable pleasures. It was therefore a pleasant expected bearing the shadow of the dead warriors to arrival time, have the distinction of fighting in the battle at the end of the world, Ragnarök, part of the divine hosts of Odin.

These mythical feminine deities represent found or clearly two seemingly contradictory aspects. Givers of life and time of death, were the ones with the function of providing the victory in battle, instilling a certain air warriors that make them invincible in battle. But, as we know, others were the true 'chosen', to which they were presented with beautiful and radiant, displaying dazzling flashes. What at first glance looked like a mortal warrior aurora borealis in the sky, was a Valkyrie, and even in their hearts they knew that death had come, his spirit rejoiced in such glory.

In this painting, Edward Robert Hughes is impressive in a deep black winged horse on the float to death, flying the skies with his eyes sharpened and ready to spot the heroic warrior. His hair is golden like the walls of Valhalla, the position of his body indicates severity ... ... rigor force, without losing any of their delicacy and femininity.
